JOAN

In association with Derby Theatre

Written by Lucy J Skilbeck

An earthy story of courage, conviction and hope, this is Joan of Arc. Performed by drag king champion Lucy Jane Parkinson, history’s greatest gender-warrior takes to the stage, dragging up as the men she defies in this smash-hit show.

Packed with guts, heart (and some well placed couscous), JOAN is the latest daring fusion of lyrical new writing and cabaret prowess from the multi-award winning Milk Presents.

What happens when a disguise becomes something a lot more real and you have to fight for who you really are? A fearless solo play, with uproarious songs, about what it means to stand out, stand up and stand alone.

Winner of the Scotsman Fringe First Award, Stage Award and Spirit of the Fringe Award 2016

Supported by BBC Performing Arts Fund, Arts Council England and Derby Theatre

A figure of both history and legend, the tale of Joan of Arc has spoken to a huge breadth of people for centuries. This is a timely and refreshing look at one of history’s most famous heroines – exploring the salient themes of identity, courage and belief. JOAN is a drag King theatre show that aims to introduce new audiences to this ever-growing art form, placing it within theatre spaces and community settings.  Drag Queens have long been at the forefront experimental performance and popular entertainment, but Kings (female to male performers) are quickly catching up. This show resonates with an ever-growing dialogue about gender and sexuality and the need to represent a wider demographic in our society.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

JOAN stormed the Edinburgh Fringe last as part of Underbelly Untapped at Underbelly Cowgate.

The show took home a bucket load of 4 and 5 Star reviews and not only that, we are so proud to announce that we picked up three awards:

The Stage Edinburgh Award

A Scotsman Fringe First Award

A Mervyn Stutter, Spirit of the Fringe Award

Accessibilty

We're really pleased to be able to say that Milk teamed up with Derby Theatre & Talking Birds Theatre Company to provide a brand new captioning tool for JOAN

The Difference Engine is a pinoeering access system, developed by Talking Birds Theatre Company, to provide access to experimental, small scale and site-specific performance. It broadcasts captions (and potentially much more) to smart phones and tablets. The Difference Engine is currently a prototype access system. It's been used successfully on a number of shows, and it worked really wel for us.

If you would like to know more about the Difference Engine why not visit the Talking Birds website. Also, if you would like to discuss this as an option when programming JOAN at your venue then we’d love to hear from you.
